The popular alternative to conventional sugar
Supplier of xylitol (birch sugar)
Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that, among other things, occurs in fruits and vegetables, but is also produced chemically from wood. The sweetener is very similar to table sugar in taste and sweetness, but has around 40% fewer calories. Due to its insulin-independent metabolism, the sugar substitute is also suitable for diabetics.
Xylitol (birch sugar) is used in the processing industry for confectionery, food, beverages, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, such as
- sugar-free/reduced energy confectionery and baked goods
- sugar-free chewing gum
- sugar-free/reduced energy drinks
- sugar-free/reduced energy desserts
- sugar-free oral hygiene and
- sugar-free medicines
Xylitol is heat stable and can be used for cooking and baking. It also has no bitter aftertaste. Instead, the sweetness sets in slowly, leaving a lingering sweet aftertaste after swallowing. The antibacterial properties of xylitol are particularly noteworthy. Research since the 1970s has shown that the sugar substitute cannot be used by the bacterium that is mainly involved in the development of tooth decay (Streptococcus mutans). Xylitol therefore serves as a sugar substitute, but also to prevent plaque and tooth decay.
