Sodium saccharin – calorie-free and gentle on the teeth

Supplier of sodium saccharin (E954)

Sodium saccharin, also known as saccharin sodium, is a synthetic sweetener that is often used as a low-calorie sugar substitute. Its sweetness is 450 to 500 times that of ordinary household sugar. It is among the additives with the highest sweetening power and is the most frequently produced sweetener in the world. Sodium saccharin is used in the food industry, amongst other things, for the production of dietary and low-calorie products.

Sodium saccharin (E954) is used in the processing industry for sweeteners and sugar substitutes, food, animal feed, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products and technical applications, such as

  • Beverages
  • Desserts and confectionery
  • Spreads
  • Canned food
  • Jellies and jam
  • Food supplements
  • Sauces
  • Dental care
  • Medicines
  • Oral hygiene and animal feed

Sodium saccharin is the 'oldie' among sweeteners; its discovery dates back to 1879. Sugar substitutes are particularly popular due to their flavour-enhancing effect that is also gentle on the teeth. Sodium saccharin is also quickly absorbed by the body, but not metabolised. Since it is resistant to heat and cold, it is used in many areas. Furthermore, there is a good synergy with cyclamate.
