Uridine 5'-monophosphate disodium salt (UMP)

Fuel for the brain

14.07.2022

In the brain, Uridine is indispensable for cognitive functions. It is involved in the building of the neuronal membrane, which is responsible for the transmission of information between the cells. However, it can happen that the amounts absorbed through food and the self-synthesised amounts are not enough. In this case, or in case of increased performance requirements in the brain, supplementation can certainly be useful. Pure Uridine has only a low bioavailability and this is why Uridine 5'monophosphate is preferred in the field of human nutrition (food supplements and so-called nootropics), as it is better available to the organism.

Uridine belongs to the group of nucleotides and is one of the building blocks for RNA (Ribonucleic Acid). It is found in many foods, for instance in yeast, broccoli or fish, and is also synthesised in small amounts in the liver.

Uridine 5'-monophosphate is explicitly mentioned in the Regulation on Dietary Foodstuffs (Dietary Regulation) under category 5/nucleotides and can therefore be used in appropriate products.

Application:
UMP is offered as a food supplement in the form of capsules or powder. It is also often combined with ingredients like Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, or DHA to further optimise the effect.
